About Department
The department of botany is one of the leading departments of the faculty of science. The department was established in 1969, the year of establishment of the college. The department provides both undergraduate and post graduate courses in Botany. The undergraduate courses were started in 1969 but the post-graduation course commenced in 1994. The department has extraordinary infrastructure for imparting required plant science courses. We also have a state of the art department library and laboratory for imparting practical experience to the students. The faculty members are well qualified and experienced in their own respective areas of research. There are four sanctioned post of teachers in the department.
The earliest professors and spear holders of the department were Late Prof Masood Hassan and Prof Iqbal Ahmed followed by Late Prof Syed Safirul Hassan. They have an important contribution in helping the department rise to its highest valor. Prof Ashfaque Ahmed and Prof Shahid Rahim later joined the department in 1976, and have contributed immense talent and resource to the department. This was followed by the joining of Prof Ayaz Ahmed in Feburay 1982. Prof Syed Faiyaz Hashmi was also one of the renowned educationist in the department. He then moved on to the Central University in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The department of Botany organizes seminars, educational tours, botanical excursions and skill development program for the benefit of the students. Quiz and debates are also organized. The students of the department have also performed ever well in university and competitive examinations. The department also offers specialization in plant pathology in MSc courses. The department has also proposed to start facilities of specialization in other branches like Environmental biology and Cytogenetic and plant breeding in the years to come.
