About Department
Dept of Economics is as old as the college itself. Founder HOD, Professor late SM Humair Ahmad nurtured the dept single handedly for more than a decade before the appointment of Prof Jalauddin Ansari, the present officiating Principal pf the college. Prof Ansari joined as a lecturer in September’1981. Later he was promoted first as Reader and subsequently as Professor in the Dept of Economics. He has been officiating as the Principal of the College since the superannuation of Prof Arun Kumar Prasad.
Md Abdul Quadir joined in Nov’1983 to strengthen the dedicated team. After Prof SM Humair Ahmad’s untimely demise while still in active service, Prof SM Nasim Ahmed was invited to fill the vacuum caused by Professor Late SM Humair Ahmed’s departure from the scene and as such, for more than a decade now, Prof SM Nasim Ahmad has been a strong academic pillar of the dept.
For a brief period Dr Nuzhat Jahan Perween too served the dept as a guest teacher.
All these years, the dept has been, with single minded devotion, engaged in providing a sound foundation to under graduate students and a fairly large number of the students of the dept have brought glory to the dept.
The dept proposes to study the prospects of food processing and other viable industries in the region. It also proposes to study the changing crop pattern in the Magadh region, suitability of different crops in view of water deficiency and non availability of permanent sources of irrigation as all the eight rivers of the Gaya district with a combined length of 458 kms are seasonal in nature and remain powder dry for the better part of the year.
The economic consequences of the closure of Gaya Cotton Mill, Guraru Sugar Mill and Warisaliganj Sugar Mill also need an in depth study. Such studies have become all the more important in view of the decentralised nature of planning and local resource based approach to development.
